LOVE IT. That is the cool thing about working with older students. I love my babies, but there are days I wish that I could let them work on something that extreme.

Amen! What an inspiring and touching evening! I was amazed at the creativity and hard work that everyone shared that night. My students felt the same way when they presented their projects last week. We had over 100 visitors and the students were beaming as they shared their hard work. Everyone was amazed at their knowledge, creativity, and professionalism in sharing their work. I can't wait to do another one of these projects.

These are great ideas! I also loved the ideas suggested in the reading of focusing on specific details for revision instead of critiquing the whole paper. It helps the students to focus on a specific revision and helps the one being edited to retain their self-image! I just can't fill a paper with corrections and hand it back to the student... It does more damage than good. This is a great way to support and encourage their writing. I love the suggestion to replace "big" with "immense"... You know they're getting the idea! Way to go!

This is a perfect example of AUTHENTIC LEARNING. You weren't just fulfilling an assignment, you were learning about something you had a sincere interest in and will remember in the future! That's what it is all about!

Great ideas, Caroline! I am using these books in my classroom this week. We started a mini unit by looking at Calvin and Hobbes comic strips and doing a character study. Then, the students filled in comic strips that I had copied and erased the dialogue. It was really fun and the students did an outstanding job. I thought many of their dialogues were funnier than the originals! We will apply this knowledge as we attempt to write a story for wordless books later in the week. We will be using several David Wisener books and I'm really looking forward to seeing what they can do! Thanks for sharing your ideas!

Caroline,
I feel the same way about the wordless picture books. They can be a time crunch, but I deleivered a lesson plan with A Day A Dog on Friday. The kids loved it and they were involved in verbal feedback about each page on the book. After I delivered the plan the students were to write 3-5 sentences about some part of the book. I got wonderful results. Wordless picture books help students to create an imagination for writing. No matter what age group, I think wordless picture books are wonderful.
